Are you looking to do a K swap in your '92-'95 EG Civic, '96-'00 EK Civic or '94-'01 Integra DC2? We've put together a basic/essential kit to get you started, along with a selection of optional parts to help you complete your K20 or K24 conversion.
You will need to source your own Engine/Gearbox/Engine harness/Shifter Box/Shifter Cables
Our "TURN-KEY" kit consist of the following:
FAQ!
Which engines are compatible with this swap kit and what kind of power can it support?
K20a2 - These are found in the 02-04 Integra Type R. Rated at 220hp these are the first engines to start putting the K series on the map. Known for its 11:1 compression, 50 degrees of variable cam timing and 8200 rpm redline stock. These engines have no problem revving to 8600 rpm's stock and will support the ballpark of 500hp without the need of forged internals. These can be found on today's used engine market for anywhere between $2500-$3000 AUD on average.
K20z1 - These are the following gen engine of the K20a2 found in the 05-06 Intregra Type S. These engines carry a slightly higher redline, a larger intake camshaft and slightly stronger valve springs. Slightly more expensive and can be found for around $3000 AUD and up
K20z4 - Last N/A K20 produced and found in the Civic FN2 Type R. 11.1 compresion and arguably the best cylinder head made to date. (Best flowing head & cams) The oem engine harness cannot be used as the fn2 was produced with dbw throttle control (Not kswap friendly). Also comes with the same balancer shaft oil pumps as the k24 engines. However they can be swapped out for the Type R oil pump upgrade (Balancer shaft delete kit). Fidning one with lower kms is alot easier than its other k20 variants as its found in the later model Type R, Valued at around $3000 AUD
K20A(R)- These are the most sought out after engines in the Honda K20 lineup. These engines came in the EP3 Civic Type R, DC5 Integra Type R, and Accord Euro R. These engines feature a slightly higher compression of 11.5:1, larger camshafts on the intake and exhaust side, a slightly better valve job and valves, stronger valve springs, and fine balanced internals. These engines have no problem being spun up to 8800rpm's stock and with proper tuning will handle the same abuse under boost as the other K20a2. It's rare to find these engines as just a longblock but when they come about expect to pay anywhere from $3500-$4000 AUD
K24a1 - These engines are found in the 02-06 Honda CRV and feature a higher flowing cylinder head. Although it still features the same one sided vtec and limited 25 degrees of variable cam movement it is known to make the most power out of the budget low output K24 engine varants.
K24a3 - These engines are found in the 04-08 Accord euro CL9. This engine is rated at 220hp and features vtec on both the intake and exhaust side of the cylinder head. From the factory it was limited to 25 degrees of variable cam timing It's 10.5:1 compression ratio makes it very suitable for either a mild naturally aspirated or boost applications. These engines will support up to 500hp with proper tuning. The updated version which existed from 06-08 brought a few updates to even further its performance. The updated cylinder head features 1mm larger intake valves and larger cams. These engines can be found on average from $1500-$2500 AUD
What are my ECU options?
The most popular ecu for this swap in Australia is the Haltech platinum pro "plug in" or an Elite 1500 with patch Harness to suit your designated engine loom.
Haltech ECUs are split into two major groups; Plug'n'Play and Universal. Are you planning to use the factory harness? If the answer is yes, then start looking at the Plug’n’Play range. These include Pro Plugin ECUs that connect directly into your factory harness or Elite ECUs that connect to the factory harness via a special Plug’n’Play Adaptor.
If you’re planning to do an engine swap, completely rewire your car or building a race car from ground up then head straight for the Universal ECU range, like the Elite series. These ECUs are supported with a variety of wiring options, from universal wiring harnesses to engine-specific termindated harnesses. Like their name suggests, Universal ECUs will work with most of the popular engines.
Know your engine
Your engine requirements will dictate the features you’ll need from your ECU. The number of Inputs and Outputs required will quickly narrow down your selection. From there look at engine specific functionality requirements like Drive-By-Wire throttle, Flex Fuel, Knock Control, Long Term Learning or Data Logging. Adding these to your list will further narrow down your choices.
Know your goals
If you’re building a race car then you’ll no doubt be needing functions that will help you go faster, quicker and more reliably. Check the “Race Functions” section in the ECU Buyers Guide for competition functions like Boost Control, Nitrous Control, Flat Shift, Trans Brake, Torque Management and others.
What is the difference between PRB and RBB cylinder heads?
The RBB is the designation for the 04-08 CL9 accord euro Cylinder head (K24a3). The RBB port design is often overlooked but highly capable. It's small volume high speed intake side mates well with the design of the exhaust ports allowing it to support a good amount of power for both naturally aspirated and force inducted combos
The PRB is the most popular of the K series cylinder heads which are found in the 02-04 DC5 integra type R (K20a2) and the 05-06 Integra type S (K20z1). They also are found in different variants of the K20 type R engines. Out of the box this casting offers the highest flowing intake and exhaust ports for maximum power figures in the high rpm range. Power gains are reflected further with larger cams or forced induction>
The RSP head is known to be the best of the bunch which can be found in the FN2 type R (K20Z4) 07-2012. Known to have the best flowing head with slightly more aggressive cams.
What is the best gearbox for my Kswap?
Most k series gearboxes can work in your kswap but in terms of having your speedometer work and avoiding issues like reverse lockout and shifter box compatitibility it is recomended to use the prb gearbox out of the Integra dc5 type R (k20a2) and the Civic Ep3 type R (k20a).
Dc5 Integra type S (z1) has the same gearbox casing and shift mechanism as the ep3 and dc5r and works great in your kswap. But the VSS (In some cases it can cause innacurate speedometre reading) which is located at the front of the gearbox, and reads at a different signal compared to the R variant gearboxes. They share the same internal ratios but slightly longer 4th 5th and 6th compared to the type r variants. (Great for k24 setups as they have a lower redline)
Utilising K24 gearboxes can work but sometimes becomes abit more tricky when setting up shifter boxes and shifter cables to suit the different gearbox casing and Shifter Mechanism they come with. The ratios are also much longer and ends up costing more in the long run to set it up right.
